I’ve been asked to teach a disciple now in the coming months and was asked to speak ont he spiritual disciplines. I am no master at these disciplines, so it has been a humbling experience to study and prepare for these lessons. I thought I would share some thoughts on here from my studying.

Over the past week I have read Paul Miller’s The Praying Life which has been formative in shaping my view on spending time with God. Much of my thoughts are taken directly from his book. If you have the time, give his book a read. It has been wonderful for my soul.

Here are some thoughts from my Lessons:

Blow time with God.

I was talking to my girlfriend Courtney, about this point. When I talk with Courtney, it isn’t only on the phone on the way to work, or 5 minutes before I go to bed, or maybe a text here and there during lunch. If I only did that, she would not be a happy girl and I would not be a happy boy. I want to spend time with just Courtney. So each night, I talk to Courtney, for at least 45 minutes. Just me and her. Nothing else. I’m not doing homework or texting other people or thinking about a million other things, it’s just me and court and we are loving it. I love spending that time with her. As far as productivity goes, I am absolutely blowing time. But it’s time I want to spend to get closer to Courtney.

Now if we’re like that with people we love, how can we expect things to be different with God. I urge you to spend time with just you and God and to desire to be intimate with him. Don’t just reserve time with him while you are covering other things as well. Give him unadulterated time. Pray in secret with your Father, he will reward you.

I’ll post more later.
